Acapulco

Acapulco, affectionately called the Queen of the Mexican Riviera, is located in the Mexican state of Guerrero, about 230 miles south of Mexico City on Mexico's southwest Pacific Coast. It is bordered by the spectacular Acapulco Bay to the west, and by the majestic Sierra Madre mountains to the east. Acapulco was founded by the Nahua Indians around 3000 B.C. The town was later conquered by the Spaniards in the early 1500's. For several centuries thereafter, the town was operated by the Spaniards as a thriving seaport. Acapulco did not become a major vacation destination until the 1920s, when the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) visited the area on a fishing excursion and brought the town to world attention. In subsequent decades, world celebrities and jet-setters flocked to Acapulco and tourism increased dramatically. Today, this resort town is one Mexico's top vacation destinations, attracting some 3.5 million visitors annually.

The climate in Acapulco is tropical, with sunshine averaging about 360 days a year. From January through April, average daily temperatures range from a high of 88 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 72 degrees Fahrenheit. From May through December, average daily temperatures fluctuate from a high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 76 degrees Fahrenheit. While there are occasional tropical showers, these are generally of brief duration and usually occur at night. Acapulco offers a wide range of activities and attractions that appeal to many types of travelers of all ages, such as the stunning beaches, with their satiny, fine, white and golden sands - dotted with tall, majestic palm trees. There are nearly 20 miles of beaches, and each beach is unique in some respects.

There are beaches with tranquil, calm waters, good for swimming, and beaches with stronger waves, ideal for surfers. La Condesa beach, located in the center of the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone), between the El Presidente and Continental Plaza hotels, is perhaps the most popular beach in Acapulco. Here you may engage in a wide variety of water sports including jet-skiing, water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling, parasailing and bungee jumping. This beach is also a great place to soak up the sun and people-watch. Among the major attractions in Acapulco are the famous cliff divers at La Quebrada, who risk their lives with 130 foot dives into the sea from atop steep cliffs several times daily. The dives include some evening shows, during which the divers illuminate the night sky with flaming torches.

Traditional Acapulco, known as Old Acapulco, is located on the northern side the bay. Here, visitors may stroll through the large, busy, seaside promenade and view the old San Diego Fort and La Quebrada, site of the famous cliff divers. Some interesting attractions to tour in this area include the Nuestra Senora de la Soledad Church, the very picturesque Zocalo Plaza Alvarez and the numerous bustling shops of the Mercado Municipal. Also in this area is the legendary Hotel Los Flamingos, at one time a favorite playground of the rich and famous. The majority of Acapulco's hotels and restaurants are located in the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone). Acapulco is famous for its delicious fresh seafood, including such classic dishes as Cerviche and Pescado a la Talla, but there are many restaurants which offer a large variety of international cuisines, as well as traditional Mexican dishes. Acapulco is known as a "party town" and there are numerous discos and nightclubs offering a wide variety of music and other entertainment.
