Anguilla

Anguilla, the most northerly of the British Leeward Islands and with only 35 square miles retains the laid-back character of a sleepy backwater to make it unique. The Island had almost no visitor facilities just a decade ago, but it made a decision in the 1980s to develop tourism with a slant toward luxury hotels and villas. It has since become one of the trendier top-end destinations in the Eastern Caribbean. Life centers around the fabulous, powder-white beaches and the enticing turquoise waters offering the snorkeling, fishing and sailing an experience that can't be beat. You will also be welcomed by one of the Caribbean most hospitable people.

The island's luxury hotels, inns and villas range from some of the world's most exclusive to affordable. Hang-outs of the rich and famous include Cove castles, Cap Juluca and Malliouhana. Try the Carimar and the Allamanda - both hotels offer great value and access to stunning beaches. There are also some good bed & breakfasts on the island for those on a budget. You can go shopping, dine in some of the finest restaurants in the Caribbean or just relax in the sun. If you're a water sports enthusiast then Anguilla is for you!

History buffs will find Wallblake House interesting. Built in 1787 and now fully restored, this plantation house withstood French invasions in the late 18th century. It is the only surviving plantation house on Anguilla and one of the few plantation houses in the Caribbean where the entire complex of buildings including the kitchen, stable and workers quarters have survived virtually intact. The island is also the home to some of the finest restaurants in the Caribbean. At dusk, beachfront restaurants provide a front row seat for sunset before a star-studded show takes over the sky.

You can find additional attractions on Anguilla range from their national sport of boat racing and sailing to the local art galleries. If you rent a car for a day to tour the island you'll meet many of the local artists, each perfecting their art and proud to share their talents with you. Anguilla is also noted for its gourmet restaurants, luxury resorts and charming locally owned apartments, inns and guesthouses. If diving is what you're after, Anguilla offers a superb reef system and offshore wrecks to explore. Snorkeling is sensational off Scilly Cay, a two-minute boat trip from Island Harbor on the northeast end of the Island.
