Known for
their sheltered, clear blue sailing waters and the stunning
beauty of their mountainous terrain, the
British Virgin Islands
lie some 60 miles east
of Puerto Rico. Although there are 50 islands, rocks and
cays dotting our sparkling blue sea, many of them are
uninhabited. Chiefly volcanic in origin, with the exception
of Anegada, which is a coral and limestone atoll, most of
the islands are grouped around the Sir Francis Drake
Channel, named after the daring British adventurer who
launched an attack against the Spanish from the islands in
1595. |

The islands offer a rich landscape of
color; coastlines of white sand and palm trees; an unspoilt
playground for pelicans, booby birds and terns; some of the
friendliest faces in the Caribbean. Life here is slow and
friendly. As soon as you arrive you’ll start to relax. You
really are at an out-of-the-way location here, free to
really forget the cares you’ve left behind. It is the sea,
the sailing, the diving, and the uncanny beauty of the
beaches and shores that attract visitors to the islands. No
hotels reach much higher than two stories—about the height
of the tallest palm tree. The islands are home to no
casinos, no large nightclubs, and, for that matter, no large
towns. |

A wide
variety of local and international cuisine; abundant water sports
facilities; a balmy sub-tropical climate moderated by soft gentle breezes
and unspoilt surroundings for those people who wish to relax away from
the crowds.
Because of the difference in rainfall, soil and exposure, our islands
have a wide variety of vegetation. There are lush areas where palms and
tropical fruit trees thrive, as well as hills spotted with cactus,
loblolly, frangipani and wild tamarind. In the valleys, there are
brilliant tropical blooms, including hibiscus, bougainvillea and
flamboyant. Along the seashores, it is not uncommon to see mangrove and
sea grape trees sculpted by the wind. |

Protection of the natural
beauty of the BVI is a prime concern to residents as well as visitors.
It's an effort that extends below the surface of the sea as well.
Non-glitzy but very comfortable
lodgings range from beach side honeymoon cottages to mountain top villas
with private pool and Jacuzzi.
Low-keyed luxury accommodations are also available on several single
resort islands.
What choices! Conch fritters, Jerk chicken, goat water, fresh local
lobster, steaks, vegetarian dishes, fresh fish of all kinds and much more
to choose from. Whatever your epicurean fancy, the British Virgin Islands
are sure to satisfy your every craving. Discover the local treats when
you arrive under the warm tropical sun... |
