Grand Cayman,
Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. we all know this lovely
Caribbean island trio. Located in the western
Caribbean just 480 miles south of Miami and 150 miles south
of Cuba. The Cayman Islands are safe, relaxing, tranquil and
best of all, home to some of the friendliest people in the
Caribbean. It's no wonder that so many honeymooners choose
to begin their lives together in the beautiful Cayman
Islands. Board a flight from the gateway city of Miami and
in just one hour you'll be in the Cayman Islands, a British
Crown Colony of three islands that total just 100 square
miles in area. They are an attractive mix of Caribbean charm
and American efficiency. Sweeping white sands and clear blue
waters, year-round vacation weather, great duty-free
shopping, and the courtesy and ready charm of the island's
residents offer the very best of all worlds. |

There are no
rivers on any of the islands. The coasts are largely
protected by offshore reefs and in some places by a mangrove
fringe that sometimes extends into inland swamps.
Geographically, the Cayman Islands is part of the Cayman
Ridge, which extends westward from Cuba. The Cayman Trench,
the deepest part of the Caribbean at a depth of over four
miles, separates the three small islands from Jamaica. The
islands are also located on the plate boundary between the
North American and Caribbean tectonic plates. The tectonic
plates in Cayman’s region are in continuous lateral movement
against each other. This movement, with the Caribbean plate
traveling in an eastward direction and the North American
plate moving west, limits the size of earthquakes and there
has never been an event recorded of more than magnitude 7. |

It is not
unusual for minor tremors to be recorded. Many residents don’t even
notice them. However in December 2004 a quake of 6.8 magnitude rocked
Grand Cayman and everyone noticed. The earthquake, short in duration,
opened some small sinkholes but otherwise didn’t cause any damage. The
temperature, summer or winter, seldom goes lower than 70°F. or higher
than 90°F. The average is 78°F. in the winter and about 86°F in the
summer. The average annual humidity in 2004 was 77 percent. Rainfall
varies over the Islands and seasonally, but in George Town, the capital
on Grand Cayman, the average monthly figure for 2004 was 6 inches.
Between May and October the prevailing winds are from east to south; from
December to April, the coolest season of the year, prevailing winds are
from the northeast to northwest. The hurricane season is from June to
November. |

The
Cayman Islands enjoy a duty-free status and our capital of George Town in
Grand Cayman is one of the most attractive shopping centers in the
Caribbean. Here you'll find not only the main duty-free shops, but also a
fine selection of fine jewellery, specialty and souvenir shops as well as
a variety of casual restaurants, fast-food outlets and small snack bars
offers visitors a selection ranging from elegant fine dining to budget
fast food and take out. The Cayman Islands offer an enjoyable variety of
nightlife and entertainment. Bars, clubs and dance halls must close by
3:00am on weekdays and midnight on Saturdays. There are no nightclubs
open on Sunday. Tennis, squash, volleyball, jogging, walking, cycling and
a good selection of local health clubs and fitness centers are other
activities enjoyed by visitors. |
