Orinoco Delta |

This is one of
the least known natural wonders of the world. In the
Orinoco Delta, life carries on in the water. The area
that is not covered by water is a big swamp surrounded by
innumerable tributaries of the Orinoco River that flow into
the Atlantic Ocean. The dense jungle is home to a huge variety
of wildlife. You will be able to observe from the comfort of a
"bongo" (local riverboat) any number of birds, monkeys,
alligators, piranhas and many other species typical of the
area. Along the river shore there are Warao Indian communities
built on stilts. The Indians dedicate their time to hunting,
fishing and weaving baskets and hammocks. |

Inner
Delta: To reach this area you will fly to Maturín,
then take a bus ride to Bujas. You will then
travel on the river to the camp located on Boca de Tigre
(Tiger Island), from where the jungle is further explored to
enjoy the exuberant vegetation and the wildlife. |

Outer
Delta: Fly to the Outer Delta on one
of our Cessna Caravan floatplanes. The one hour trip in the
floatplane from Maturín to San Francisco de Guayos
is an experience in itself. Guayos is a Mission that
was built at the turn of the century. Lodging will be in a
typical structure built on stilts overlooking the river. Side
trips will take you to visit the Mission, travel in the narrow
"caños" (small rivers), a visit to a hearts of palm factory.
For longer stays, you can travel to the Mariusa
National Park (full day). |
