St. Kitts is
located in the Eastern Caribbean at 17 20 North, 62 45 West,
roughly 1,200 miles from Miami, 1600 miles from New York,
4,000 miles from London and about 45 minutes by plane from
Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The island is 69
square miles with a population of 31,880. Basseterre is the
capital
located on the
Southern side of the island. Intoxicating
natural beauty, sunny skies, warm waters, and white sandy
beaches combine to make St. Kitts one of the most seductive
spots in the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus first spotted
St. Kitts in 1493, when it was populated with native tribes,
but the Europeans did not colonize until the British arrived
in 1623. |

Its strategic
location and valuable sugar trade led to an advanced and
luxurious development that was among the best in the
Colonial Caribbean. While development has been of the
highest quality, it has fortunately remained in low
quantity, so St. Kitts remains un-crowded and unspoiled,
famous around the world for excellent preservation of the
ecosystems. St. Kitts and Navis are volcanic islands; a fact
to which it owes its dramatic central mountains that were
created through lava formations. St. Kitts Pre-Columbian Carib inhabitants knew their island
with the name of "Liamuiga" or fertile land, a reference to
the island's rich and productive volcanic soil. |
 |
St. Kitts and
Nevis were the pearls of the British Caribbean, rich and enormously
important islands that were celebrated throughout Europe. Nevis, also
known as the "Queen of the Caribbees," possessed unimaginable wealth from its super productive sugar industry, while on St. Kitts the impregnable fortress of Brimstone Hill stood as the
"Gibraltar" of the West Indies. The atmosphere in St. Kitts and Nevis is
palpably luxuriant an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and
fantastically abundant vegetation, tropical forest areas and seaside
lagoons. A great aspect of St. Kitts
and Nevis culture is they folklore such as: Clowns, Moko-Jumbies,
Masquerade, Bull and Actors. |
